How do I create a Column chart report?
The Natural HR Report builder analytics feature provides many data sources and several report types to choose from, giving you the ability to create reports in different formats:
- Table
- Pivot table
- Bar chart
- Line chart
- Pie chart
- Tile
- Column chart
A Column chart report can track changes or trends over long and short periods of time such as for time off requests. They are also a good way to show change over time by comparing column heights. In this example we want a Column chart to report on absences for a single, or multiple time off types.
To create a Column chart report go to:
Reporting -> Report builder -> New report
Choose Column Chart from Select a report type.
So here we have selected Time off period as our data source.
Next, we give the report a meaningful name.
If required, provide a description for the report.
- Select 'Date' from Select Label Axis.
- Enter a label name or it will default to the field name if you leave this blank.
- Select 'Duration' from Select Value Axis
- The aggregate will be 'Sum'
- Enter a label name or it will default to the field name if you leave this blank.
Next, we want to apply a filter to show only the Covid-19 time off types by selecting:
Reason
Equals
Self isolating with symptoms
AND
To make sure only those employees who are active are reported, add a second filter and select:
Active
Equals
Active
You can check what the report looks like by clicking on 'Edit report' followed by 'View Report'.
This report shows the number of absences per day for each Covid-19 absence with symptoms.
In the Select Chart Options section you can choose Order, Value, Legend and Trend options which will change the appearance of your chart. Depending on the type and volume of data you are reporting on, these may make little or no difference to your chart.
The Drilldown option allows you to link this Line chart to another report so you can see more employee detail associated to this report.
- First select 'Enable drilldown'
- Select 'Drilldown by clicking entire chart' and then choose 'Drilldown to report' or 'Drilldown to dashboard'
- Depending on whether you have chosen report or dashboard, select a report or dashboard you created previously with associated data
- Alternatively, select 'Drilldown by clicking on a value' then select a report you created previously with associated data.
- If you have selected 'Drilldown by clicking on a value' then select one or more filters, in this case we are only reporting on Date so that is the only filter available.
You can check what the report looks like by clicking on 'Edit report' followed by 'View Report'. Here you can see the report with a Trend line showing in red. In addition, you can hover on any of the data points in the chart to see additional information.
Depending on how you have chosen to drilldown, either click anywhere on the report or click on any data point, and the drilldown report we linked to will show associated data, in this case we can see names, department and absence on that specific day.
